Back in 1977, during the first generation of video games, the PC-50x standard was created, also known as SD-050 named after Soundic who were the OEM for most of the PC-50x consoles
These consoles differed from the earlier Pong consoles as they featured interchangable cartridges, meaning you could buy new games for your console. In reality the cartridge had one of the General Instruments AY-3-8xxx chips inside it, and the console was just the means of connecting the chip inside the cartridge to the TV and controllers
As well as the usual Pong games, there were space shooter, racing, and breakout style games
Albeit with the straight lines, square balls, and simple square wave tones of the earlier Pong games we all know and love
Each cartridge could feature up to ten game variants. These would be selected by either ten buttons on the console, or a ten position dial. There would also be some game option switches, and each controller would have an action/serve button as well as the analogue stick
On this page I show all the different cartridges in the museum, and the different case shapes which made them incompatible with other brands even though they would be electrically compatible
